Even more newspapers are adopting the New York Times’ paywall structure in the US following the Gray Lady’s adoption of the free-to-paid content scale earlier this year and its moderate success.
On Tuesday, 23 newspapers in 11 states began operating under a similar structure, allowing visitors to view five articles each month free before paying to access the papers’ online content. All are small or medium sized titles, and the larger papers under the MediaNews Group umbrella will not be affected by the new pricing structure- for now. Interestingly, print subscribers are not exempt from the pricing, nor are they offered a special incentive to for buying physical copies of the newspaper. All are priced at $1.99 per month or $19.99 annually for access to the news sites, and Press+ will be used to administrate the subscriptions.
Nine papers in California are affected by the new pricing structure, as well as two in Massachusetts, seven in New Mexico, three in Pennsylvania and two in Vermont. Larger titles not affected by the paywalls include the Salt Lake City Tribune or the Denver Post. You can view a full list of affected newspapers over at PaidContent.org.
