Although watching a trainwreck usually doesn’t feel good, you could be forgiven for getting a little bit of pleasure from the mass exodus from GoDaddy after the company initially threw its support behind the internet-killing Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) legislation.
GoDaddy later sheepishly reversed their position, but not before Reddit users organized a scheduled boycott for December 29th- and when the dust cleared, before the date even came to pass, more than 70,000 domains were transferred away from the already not well-loved service. But it seems that GoDaddy might not be taking the loss of business in stride, and competitor Namecheap has out and out alleged that the company is trying to thwart customer efforts to leave GoDaddy. In a blog post, Namecheap says:
“As many customers have recently complained of transfer issues, we suspect that this competitor is thwarting efforts to transfer domains away from them… Specifically, GoDaddy appears to be returning incomplete WHOIS information to Namecheap, delaying the transfer process. This practice is against ICANN rules.
We at Namecheap believe that this action speaks volumes about the impact that informed customers are having on GoDaddy’s business… It’s a shame that GoDaddy feels they have to block their (former) customers from voting with their dollars. We can only guess that at GoDaddy, desperate times call for desperate measures.”
After pledging to process every transfer request by hand, Namecheap posted an update confirming they’d cleared the way with GoDaddy:
“GoDaddy has confirmed they have finally unblocked our queries. The transfer queue is being cleared and all transfers should go smoothly from here on. Many thanks to our customers and supporters for bringing this issue the attention it deserved!”
