It’s finally happened- the much lamented cult hit Arrested Development is returning to the small (and even smaller) screen, with new episodes streaming via Netflix in 2013.
Yes, it’s a whole year and change to wait, but fans of the show have been calling for a return of the canceled-too-soon sitcom for five years now and the solid deal is a first after a half-decade of teasing. The new episodes of Arrested Development should also do a lot to turn around public perception of Netflix, as many customers are still displeased with the service for jacking up prices and trying to split the companies into a DVD rental service and a streaming service back in September.
Twitter is, as you might imagine, all over news of the return of Arrested Development, and both companies issued comment expressing excitement over the decision. Fox Filmed Entertainment president of new media and digital distribution Peter Levinsohn said:
“Netflix’s bold entrance into original programming presents an exciting new opportunity for our two companies… Bringing a classic show back to production on new episodes exclusively for Netflix customers is a game changer, and illustrates the incredible potential the new digital landscape affords great content providers like 20th Century Fox Television and Imagine.”
Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said:
“Arrested Development is one of the finest American comedies in TV history and its return through Netflix is a perfect example of how we are working closely with studios and networks to provide consumers with entertainment they love.”
No specific date was disclosed, and it’s believed the shows will begin to air in early 2013.
