Celebrity gossip is a huge driver of traffic on the web, and Entertainment Weekly‘s EW.com has surpassed the one billion pageview mark, it has been reported.
The brand has experienced strong “digital media growth across platforms” in 2011, hitting the milestone far ahead of its numbers in 2010. In 2011, EW.com reports 66% year-over-year page view growth for television related content. In addition, the site has been betaing an additional viewing tool called the “viEWwer,” and indicates hope it will drive traffic more aggressively in 2012.
Social media has not surprisingly been a big boon for the site’s traffic, with referrals from sites like Facebook and Twitter up 330% in the past ten months. Entertainment Weekly has 1.76 million Twitter followers and more than 170,000 fans on Facebook. EW.com’s managing editor Bill Gannon commented on the site’s 2011 growth:
“We’ve refocused and re-energized our digital presence with a range of strategic new editorial efforts, new experiences, and a new social media strategy.”
Mobile was another area of growth for the site, with 2.7 million uniques and 11.9 million pageviews for EW.com’s mobile site in October.
