Brits and Irish folk jealous of their American cousins’ easy access to streaming films and TV content won’t have very long to wait until the same options become available on their shores.
The DVD service formerly known as Qwikster and streaming service consistently known as Netflix is crossing the pond in 2012, the company has confirmed, expanding to the UK and Ireland “early next year.” The UK launch follows an expansion into the Latin American market by Netflix this summer that was met with mixed success as well as a Canadian launch in 2010 that has been good for the company’s bottom line.
According to the Washington Post, details about content were confirmed but the overall terms of the service will be withheld until launch draws nearer:
The company said Monday that subscribers will get unlimited TV shows and movies streaming online to their televisions and computers, Macs, tablets and cellular phones for a monthly fee… The Los Gatos, Calif.-based company, which will report its third-quarter financial results after the stock market closes on Monday, said details about pricing, content and supported devices will be disclosed closer to launch.
No word on exactly when the launch is expected in early 2012. Netflix will have Amazon UK to contend with in the space in the UK and Ireland.
