America’s paper of record went down for an interminable 40-minutes Tuesday night, displaying a 404 error to readers who attempted to access the New York Times’ home page.
The old media stalwart used a newer form of technology to address the outage and keep their readers abreast of the issue’s progress until it was solved, though. The @nytimes Twitter account not only acknowledged the issue, it directed readers and Twitter followers toward accessible content via the page’s recently tweeted stories while the home page was restored. The Gray Lady tweeted:
“NYT developers are fixing problems affecting our homepage. Thanks for your patience and enjoy individual articles recently tweeted.”
After nearly an hour, the official New York Times account tweeted:
“The NYTimes home page and section fronts appear to be back up and running, but tweet us if you experience any other problems. Thank you!”
Although the Times was proactive in their attempts to use Twitter to keep traffic steady, the paper has been quiet as to what caused the outage.
