This afternoon and evening brought a flurry of stories one on top of another about the shutdown of download site MegaUpload, the massive investigation into its owners, operators and practices and the subsequent Anonymous attacks on several government sites as well as recording industry pages in retaliation for the fracas.
Among the minute-by-minute updates that began with the arrests of several of MegaUpload’s people in New Zealand- in cooperation with a US-launched investigation- was that hip-hop producer Swizz Beats was revealed as a silent partner and CEO at the company. The information was widely disseminated, and searches for Swizz Beats are trending high right now on Google.
Except, it would appear that according to a court filing, Swizz Beats isn’t actually MegaUpload’s CEO, nor is he in any way involved with the company, Forbes contends. The Hollywood Gossip quotes a lawyer who says Swizz Beatz’s involvement with MegaUpload was more tangential:
“He was in conversations to be named CEO,” lawyer Ira P. Rothken said. “His involvement in the company was highly attenuated. There were discussions and he was involved in a promotional video and in brainstorming future projects.”
The producer was not named in any of the indictments handed down following the bust.
