In the lead up to the release of the upcoming installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise- Mission: Impossible, Ghost Protocol– Paramount Pictures has taken a very forward and social approach to promoting the franchise on their Facebook page.
Facebook movie rentals haven’t quite achieved Netflix-level prominence yet (in fact, a fair number of Facebook users don’t seem to realize you can actually stream films through the social network), but the studio has offered up all three previous Mission: Impossible films on the franchise’s Facebook page. Using Facebook in such a way holds a lot of promise for films gearing up for release, and it will be interesting to see if the relatively prominent series will get a palpable boost from Paramount’s use of social media in the weeks before Mission: Impossible, Ghost Protocol‘s December 21st release. Amy Reinhard, Executive Vice President at Paramount Pictures, commented briefly on the Facebook initiative, but did not delve into the reasons behind Paramount’s campaign on the social network for this film in particular:
Over the past decade movie fans have followed the impossible exploits of Ethan Hunt and his team of IMF operatives. Now fans of Mission: Impossible on Facebook who are eagerly awaiting the release of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol have a chance to relive and share the adventures.
It is worth noting, however, that Paramount isn’t going so far as to offer up the movies for free- each viewing will cost you 30 Facebook credits, or $2.99 in actual people money.
