It may seem that smartphones are pretty much all but Facebook devices with some calling capabilities, but AllThingsD reports there is a Facebook phone in the works that has the social network at “the core of its being.”
The site spoke to the ubiquitous “sources close to the project,” who leaked all kinds of deets about the Facebook phone. It’s codenamed “Buffy,” as in Buffy Summers of Buffy the Vampire Slayer- could the idea be to murder a reigning competitive phone? The device will “run on a modified version of Android that Facebook has tweaked heavily to deeply integrate its services, as well as to support HTML5 as a platform for applications,” AllThingsD has confirmed, and the social network chose HTC over Samsung to bring the phone to market. (An event that won’t occur for 12-18 months, it was expected.)
As expected, the company declined to confirm the Facebook phone on the record, but had this to say about Buffy’s future overall:
“Our mobile strategy is simple: We think every mobile device is better if it is deeply social. We’re working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers, and application developers to bring powerful social experiences to more people around the world.”
The site also points out that Google and Apple have a lock on the smartphone market as things stand, leaving Facebook vulnerable in regards to its increasingly mobile future.
