By year’s end, video streaming site Hulu will become the only service in the genre to carry content from emerging network CW, thanks to a five year deal signed by both parties.
While many networks and content providers (like Disney) have been expressing a preference for shorter-term deals, the CW and Hulu partnership is notable for its length. Content included in the deal are CW hits like the new Sarah Michelle Gellar drama The Ringer, Hart of Dixie, The Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl, 90210 and America’s Next Top Model.
Although shows will be available on CWTV.com first, Hulu Plus subscribers will have access to the content the day after it is aired on television. Users of Hulu’s free service will have access to the content eight days after it is broadcast. For both versions of the service, the most recent five shows will be available for viewing.
Reuters quoted CW’s president in their coverage of the deal:
In the announcement, CW president Mark Pedowitz said that he hopes that making the network’s programs available for streaming on Hulu and Hulu Plus will help “build even more awareness [for the networks’s series] that will drive viewers back to the network and its affiliates. We see this as a win for everyone involved, the network, the stations, Hulu and ultimately, the viewers.”
A firm date for the content’s addition was not disclosed.
