Less than a month after Starz announced they would not renew their Netflix contract come February the movie streaming and DVD portal has announced a new deal with Discovery Communications Inc.
Under the deal Netflix will stream popular shows from the show provider including their hit series River Monsters and Man vs. Wild.
The deal is a big one for Netflix as Discovery Network executives have been hesitant to make full episodes of their shows available for online streaming, instead offering only short clips to the tech savvy.
The two-year deal is limited to U.S. viewers only and Discovery executives have a third year option should they decide to stay with the network.
At this time financial terms for the agreement have not been revealed.
Among the channels owned by the Discovery Network are; Discovery, TLC and Animal Planet, ID: Investigation Discovery, Science and Military Channel. Discovery also owns a 50% stake in the OWN Network however those shows have not been packaged with the current deal.
The deal also includes a new piece of technology for Netflix customers that will allow them to enter the words “Discovery Communications” in the company’s search bar to receive a full list of the company’s shows.
With Netflix making the horrendous decision to spin their DVD service off into Qwikster they were in need of some good press, a Discovery deal is definitely the type of good news they needed to offer their customers.
